A Dance of Devils

Synopsis

A Dance of Devils begins in the immediate wake of the Christmas Eve attack and turns the hidden invasion of Mongol Moon into overt war on the American homeland. The EMP has blinded the United States and Europe, but loss of power is only the opening move. Coordinated assaults strike civilian populations, nuclear attacks erase city centers, Russian warships crowd the Atlantic, and Chinese armor lands through Baltimore with Mount Weather as a strategic objective. The underground complex is sheltering the acting U.S. president and what remains of the national military-command structure, making the armored drive a race against the survival of organized government. Lieutenant Commander Joey Washington returns to the center of the story carrying intelligence that could change the battle. Her task is no longer simply to survive the catastrophe she witnessed from orbit: she has to get that information to Mount Weather before the attacking force can reach the bunker. The conflict also continues the ground-level threads established in Book 1: Gale and Layla Washington, An Nguyen and his Marines, Alice the Abrams, neighbors forced into local defense, and military survivors improvising around broken systems. The fighting widens from Northern Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley to the Atlantic and Baltimore approaches while preserving the series' central idea: modern war is experienced simultaneously by national command, military units, families, and ordinary communities. Book 2 becomes the second major chronological anchor, marking the transition from pre-positioned enemy networks and first-night shock into visible invasion, strategic maneuver, and organized resistance.
