With the station crippled and Earth below in crisis, Joey and her fellow astronauts abandon the ISS and commit to an emergency return far from Joey’s family.

What happened
After witnessing the opening catastrophe, Joey Washington and the remaining crew evacuate the crippled International Space Station. Their return path does not solve the problem: Joey’s family is in Virginia, while the available landing zone is in Kazakhstan.
Why the event matters in the wider war
The evacuation converts Joey from an orbital observer into a participant trying to cross the enormous geographic and military distance between a Central Asian landing area and the war unfolding around her family in Virginia.
What changes afterward
The crew departs the station, setting up the Kazakhstan return dilemma and Joey’s later race to carry critical information toward Mount Weather.
