A rag-tag group of Americans is forced to abandon a besieged U.S. Embassy in Zambia during the opening phase of World War III. With no reliable help coming from home, the survivors attempt an overland escape toward Rwanda under the leadership of Major Alex Frey and an enigmatic intelligence operative. The group includes servicemen and women, unlikely and untested soldiers, and countrymen whose survival depends on moving together through war, betrayal, environmental danger, and pursuit.

PREWAR FILE // The embassy community is not a prebuilt maneuver unit. Its members are brought together by place and crisis. The collapse of outside support means people with different levels of training and readiness must become a convoy capable of surviving far beyond the protective assumptions of diplomatic life.

The survivors are the human burden at the center of Blood Memory. Frey and the intelligence operative are only meaningful leaders because there are people to protect, persuade, discipline, move, and sometimes lose. The group turns the African theater into an evacuation story rather than a two-person adventure.
