Profile
The Sons of Carson are Reno’s home-grown insurgents in Kill Game. After Chinese troops infiltrate the city disguised as circus performers and complete Operation Wŭjù, the occupiers seize the Biggest Little City and establish their headquarters in the Ormsby Casino. The Sons become the local answer to occupation, forcing Reno’s conflict into the language the city understands best: raise the stakes or fold.
Before and entering the war
PREWAR FILE // The Sons are defined first by place rather than institutional pedigree. Reno’s position along the east-west corridor between the San Francisco Bay and the Rockies makes the city strategically useful; once the occupation force takes it, local resistance has consequences beyond civic pride because the route can move men and materiel inland.
What this character or entity does in the story
The Sons of Carson are the insurgent counterweight to Operation Wŭjù. Their existence turns Kill Game from a seizure story into an occupation-and-resistance story and gives the novella a local American force that can exploit knowledge of the city against an externally inserted enemy.
Capabilities and constraints
Local knowledge, insurgent organization, willingness to operate under occupation, and the ability to turn urban terrain and civic networks into resistance infrastructure make the Sons strategically useful well beyond their numbers.
Notable actions and decisions
Organize against the Chinese seizure of Reno; contest an occupation headquartered in the Ormsby Casino; force the occupiers to deal with a local insurgency rather than treating control of the city as complete; defend a corridor whose strategic value extends east toward the Rockies.
Key relationships and operational links
OPERATION WŬJÙ FORCE // Direct occupying enemy. The Sons exist because the Chinese operation succeeds in taking Reno but does not eliminate local resistance.
RENO CIVILIANS // The population from which resistance legitimacy, concealment, intelligence, and risk all emerge.
ORMSBY CASINO OCCUPATION HQ // Enemy command center and symbol of the city’s seizure.
Associated personnel & entities
How the file changes through the conflict
Local population under surprise occupation → organized home-grown insurgency → continuing contest over whether Reno becomes a secure Chinese corridor or an occupied city that bleeds its occupiers.
Why this dossier matters
EYES ONLY // The Sons are strongest as a place-specific resistance rather than a generic militia. Kill Game’s casino language, geography, and corridor strategy all reinforce the same idea: Reno is valuable because of where it sits, and resistance is valuable because occupation is not the same thing as control.
